Hydroponics means growing without traditional soil - the roots draw nutrients directly from the nutrient solution, so they grow faster and you have full control over nutrition. Which system to choose depends mainly on how many plants you want to grow and how much work you are willing to devote to daily operation.
Passive watering without a pump
The easiest start is offered by the self-watering AutoPot systems, which work only thanks to gravity and the AQUAvalve float valve - no pump, no electricity, no timer. The plant asks for water itself when it needs it. That is why they are the best-selling choice in this category and are suitable even for complete beginners. What is the difference between hydroponics and traditional soil growing?
In hydroponics, roots grow directly in a nutrient solution or inert medium, not in soil. As a result, the plant does not have to search for nutrients in the soil, it is served them directly, and therefore usually grows faster and gives a higher yield. In exchange, you need to monitor the pH and EC of the solution a little more carefully.
Is hydroponics suitable for beginners?
Yes, if you start with a passive system. AutoPot works without a pump or timer, so most of the things that can go wrong in hydroponics are eliminated. All you need to do is monitor the tank level and the solution pH.
What do I need for a hydroponic system?
For the system itself, you will need a nutrient solution (fertilisers for hydroponics), an inert medium such as expanded clay or mineral wool, hydroponic baskets with neoprene rings for securing the plant, and a pH/EC metre to check the solution. For active systems, also expect a pump and aeration, which are usually part of the set.
How often is the water changed in hydroponics?
The nutrient solution is usually completely replaced once every one to two weeks; in between, only water is topped up and the pH and EC are adjusted. The exact interval depends on the tank size and the number of plants - in large-capacity systems with a tank of around 100 litres or more, the solution stays stable longer than in small sets.
