EC metres

An EC metre measures the electrical conductivity of a solution, and thus tells you how concentrated the nutrient solution for your plants is - a key figure for anyone who fertilises precisely and does not want to overfeed or underfeed plants. You will find simple pocket testers as well as professional devices and probes for the root zone from brands such as Bluelab or Milwaukee.

Not sure whether a pocket tester is enough, or whether a device with a replaceable probe is worth it? Contact us at info@higarden.cz and we will advise you according to how you grow.

From the electrical conductivity value of the solution (EC - electric conductivity), we can read the concentration of mineral salts in the nutrient solution. The correct concentration is important for healthy plant growth. You can find out what the optimal EC values are here.

For EC measurement, simple testers and professional devices are used. It depends on the needs and possibilities of each grower.

The new waterproof pocket EC tester Martini with a clearly readable LCD display from this set is very popular among growers even on its own.

However, if you are looking for something more sophisticated, we are ready. What about an EC metre with electrode from GIB in German quality standard? It reliably measures temperature, TDS and ppm as well.

How do you choose an EC metre?

Decide according to where and how precisely you want to measure. Pocket testers (Milwaukee EC40, EC60 Martini) are enough for quick checking of irrigation water. Devices with a replaceable probe and Bluelab devices are appreciated by more demanding growers who want long-term accuracy. Special probes such as Bluelab Pulse are used for measurement directly in the root zone.

What is the optimal EC value?

The exact figure varies depending on the crop, growth stage and growing medium - young plants want a lower concentration, mature plants in bloom a higher one. Follow the fertiliser dosing chart and the plants' response. You can find details in our article on the electrical conductivity of the solution.

Do I need to calibrate an EC metre?

Most devices with a replaceable probe are calibrated using a calibration solution, which maintains accuracy. Some pocket testers (such as the Milwaukee EC40) do not require calibration. It is advisable to keep the probe clean and not store it dry.

Will an EC metre also measure ppm and TDS?

Many devices can switch between EC, TDS and ppm units - these are different ways of expressing the same salt concentration. Check the specifications of the particular model; combined devices often also measure temperature and pH.
