What is expanded clay used for?
Most often as an inert medium in hydroponics, where it replaces a standard substrate and serves as support for roots. However, it is also suitable as a drainage layer at the bottom of a flowerpot or as an additive to soil mixes for better aeration.
What ball size should I choose?
For hydroponics and decorative purposes, 8-16 mm balls are used - they hold their shape well, let water and air through, and do not compact. A finer fraction (4-8 mm) is more suitable for decorative covering of the substrate surface.
Why does expanded clay not nourish the plant in any way?
It is inert, meaning chemically neutral and without any nutrient content of its own. That is its advantage - you have nutrition and pH fully under control through the nutrient solution, into which nothing interferes.
Can expanded clay be used repeatedly?
Yes. After harvest, it only needs to be rinsed and cleaned, and it will serve in further cycles as well - that is exactly why it is popular in recirculating systems.
