Heating
A cold root zone delays the rooting of cuttings and seed germination by days. A heating mat keeps the substrate evenly warm (for seedlings, the target is around 21 °C) and, together with a thermostat, monitors this temperature for you - from small 11 W mats to large models and plastic heated propagators.

Heating a propagator and mini greenhouse is provided by connecting a heating mat. It makes the start of the growing cycle much easier for young plants, and besides even heating of the growing space for cultivating seedlings and cuttings, selected models also offer a practical insulating layer. You can conveniently and precisely regulate the temperature in propagators using a thermostat that is compatible with all heating mats. Quality mats have a waterproof construction and are easy to maintain with negligible power consumption.
How to choose a heating mat
The key factors are the propagator area and power input. The small ROOT!T Hobby 25x35 cm mat has a power input of 11 W and is enough for one smaller propagator, the medium 40x60 cm model handles 30 W, and the large 40x120 cm model with 60 W can serve several seed trays at once. Models from the AC Infinity SUNCORE range have a digital controller and IP67 waterproof rating, so you can set the temperature precisely and do not have to worry about moisture. If the mat does not have its own control, add a separate thermostat - it is compatible with all heating mats and will keep the root zone at the target value of around 21 °C without overheating the substrate.
Frequently asked questions
What temperature should heating be set to for cuttings and seedlings?
For most cuttings and germinating seeds, a substrate temperature of around 21 °C works well. A higher temperature tends to stress the roots, so temperature control with a probe in the medium is worthwhile.
Do I need a thermostat for the mat?
Mats with a digital controller (for example AC Infinity SUNCORE) do not need a thermostat. For simple mats without control, we recommend a thermostat - otherwise they heat at full power all the time and you may overheat the root zone.
What is the insulating layer under the mat for?
Insulation prevents heat from escaping into the cold floor, so the heat is concentrated in the root zone. The result is more even heating and lower energy consumption.
Is a heating mat safe in a humid propagator?
Quality mats have a waterproof construction; SUNCORE models achieve IP67 rating. Even so, it is advisable not to submerge them in water and to keep the connectors dry.
