A water tank is the heart of every automatic irrigation system - it holds a supply of settled water or mixed nutrient solution and determines how often you need to top up. Choose according to volume, available space, and whether you need the tank fixed in place or whether you will fold it away and store it.
Rigid or foldable?
- Rigid tanks - a stable solution that you set up and leave in place; the smaller AutoPot Tank 47 L can serve a setup of one to eight pots.
- Foldable flexitanks - textile tanks AutoPot Flexitank, Gorilla FlexPro and Aquaking can be assembled without tools in a few minutes and stored just as quickly; volumes range roughly from 50 to 750 litres.
Why use a tank heater? Roots do not absorb nutrients well when the solution is too cold - in hydroponics, it is recommended to keep the temperature roughly above 20 °C. A submersible tank heater with a thermostat will keep that limit under control for you. Glass submersible heaters are available in outputs of around 100 and 300 W; lower-output models are suitable for smaller reservoirs, while higher-output models are for large-volume tanks and colder spaces.
How to choose the right volume
- Number and size of plants - more plants mean higher consumption and a greater need for запас between refills.
- Refill interval - the less often you want to top up, the larger the tank you should choose.
- Space and handling - a foldable flexitank is suitable for a cramped grow room and does not take up space when out of season.
Frequently asked questions
Which tank heater do I need?
Choose the output according to the volume of the solution and the room temperature - for small reservoirs, a heater of around 100 W is enough; for large-volume tanks or a cold grow room, choose 300 W. The ideal option is a model with a built-in thermostat that keeps the temperature automatically.
What temperature should the nutrient solution have?
In hydroponics, it is advisable to keep the solution roughly above 20 °C; in significantly colder water, roots absorb nutrients less effectively and there is a risk of oxygen problems. We discuss why and how to monitor the temperature in the article below.
Is a foldable flexitank worth it compared with a rigid tank?
If you do not have a permanently reserved space or only need the tank for part of the year, a foldable flexitank is more practical - you can assemble it without tools and fold it away after the season. For a permanent location, a rigid tank is usually more convenient.
Do I need to let the water stand in the tank?
Letting it stand helps chlorine evaporate from tap water and equalises the temperature to room temperature. The reservoir therefore also serves as a place where you prepare the water before sending it to the plants.
