The word inert means unreactive. Inert media, or inert growing media, contain no nutrients and are used most widely in clean growing methods, especially in popular hydroponics. They are also widely used to improve soil properties. They are sought after for their absorption and retention properties. Pests and moulds, on the other hand, do not thrive in this “sterile” environment, which makes these growing media even more attractive.
