The word inert means non-reactive. Inert media, or inert substrates, contain no nutrients and are most widely used in pure growing methods, especially in the popular hydroponics. They are also widely used to improve soil properties. They are sought after for their absorption and retention properties. Pests and moulds, on the other hand, do not like this "sterile" environment at all, which again adds to the appeal of these substrates.
