Everything you need for the Ebb & Flow method, also known as "Flood and Drain" or the flood and drain system. In hydroponics, this is considered a moderately demanding method of plant cultivation and is among the most widespread. It is a practical, highly versatile irrigation system suitable both for hydroponic media and for growing in pots. The entire cycle is controlled by a timer; once it is switched on, the submersible pump starts filling the flood plastic table or flood tray with nutrient solution. As soon as the pump stops, the water with nutrients returns to the tank under the influence of gravity and is then reused. This efficient technique allows the root system to be covered very well so that it always has enough oxygen, moisture and nutrients essential for plant development. Another advantage is that during each flood, residues of unabsorbed nutrients from the previous watering are dissolved.

How often should an Ebb & Flow system flood?
The frequency is controlled by the timer and depends on the medium and the growth stage. Coarser media that dry out more quickly are flooded more often, finer ones less often. Between watering cycles, the roots must have time to oxygenate, so the cycles are set so that the medium does not remain waterlogged permanently.
Which medium is suitable for Ebb & Flow?
Inert media such as expanded clay (hydroton) are most commonly used, as they hold their shape well and can be rinsed easily. However, the system also handles growing in pots with substrate placed directly in the tray, which is a convenient transition from conventional watering to hydroponics.
How large a tray and table do I need?
The tray size determines the number and size of the plants - the range includes trays from 33x110 cm for a few plants to large-format 120x240 cm models for a full grow room. The tray needs a stable base: fixed steel tables or sliding (rolling bench) tables, which save space by allowing neighbouring tables to be moved together.
How does Ebb & Flow differ from drip irrigation?
With drip irrigation, the solution flows from above to individual plants and drains away, whereas with Ebb & Flow the entire root zone is flooded from below and the solution returns to the tank for reuse. In addition, each flood flushes away residues of salts from the previous watering.
