The pH value tells us whether a given solution reacts acidic or, on the contrary, alkaline. We measure pH values on a scale from 0-14. Exactly in the middle of this scale - at number 7 - is the pH value of neutral water. Without a supply of nutrients there would be no harvest. For plants to be able to absorb and use nutrients effectively for their development, we need to maintain the correct pH. You can find out which pH to choose for the nutrient solution here.

Frequently asked questions about pH metres
How often is a pH metre calibrated?
Calibration using calibration solutions (most often pH 4.01 and 7.01) is what keeps the measurement accurate. For normal growing use, it pays to calibrate roughly once every one to two weeks and always when you have doubts about the measured value. More accurate devices and frequent measurement mean more frequent calibration.
Why does my pH metre show nonsense or fluctuating values?
The most common cause is a dried-out or clogged measuring electrode. The pH metre probe must not be stored dry - it belongs in a storage solution that keeps the glass bulb moist and functional. A dried-out electrode stops responding reliably and the metre starts jumping on the display.
What is the difference between a pocket tester and a metre with an external probe?
A pocket pen has a fixed electrode and is ideal for quick checks of irrigation water. A device with an external (replaceable) probe usually offers higher accuracy, easy replacement of a worn electrode, and is suitable for more demanding measurements or continuous monitoring of the solution.
Does a pH metre also measure the temperature of the solution?
Most better models (for example the Milwaukee range) have a built-in thermometer and automatic temperature compensation (ATC). Temperature affects the pH value, so compensation ensures the correct result even with a cooler or warmer solution. On simpler testers, the temperature is compensated manually.
