Your own herb garden starts with a good seed. In this range you will find seeds of culinary and medicinal herbs - from classic basil, coriander and chives to perennial species such as rosemary, thyme, lemon balm or oregano. Most of the seeds come from the Czech brand MoravoSeed, complemented by practical sowing discs EasyGarden with pre-spaced seeds.
How to choose herbs
Before you reach for a specific packet, think about where the plants will grow and what you expect from them:
- Annual culinary herbs - basil, coriander, dill, marjoram or savoury grow quickly and are suitable for a fresh harvest in one season.
- Perennial species - rosemary, thyme, lemon balm, sage or lovage last for several years, but require patience. Lavender and rosemary can germinate for several weeks to months.
- Medicinal herbs - thyme, marigold, lemon balm or sage are grown for their herb and flowers with aromatic essential oils.
- Sowing discs - a ready-made mix with the correct spacing of seeds, so the seedlings do not need to be thinned or pricked out.
Site and care
Most herbs thrive in a warm, sunny spot and well-drained soil. Basil does well in warmth, cress can be forced on damp cotton wool at room temperature, and herbs such as parsley or chives can also be grown on a windowsill all year round. Do not cover the seeds of small species (for example lavender) after sowing; just press them gently into the substrate. For aromatic species, younger leaves have the mildest flavour, while older herb tends to be more pronounced.
If you want to grow herbs indoors all year round, supplementary LED lighting and a quality substrate will help them. Growing on a windowsill or outdoors is manageable even for complete beginners.
Frequently asked questions
Which herbs are easiest for beginners?
The safest start is basil, chives, parsley, dill and cress - they germinate quickly, are not demanding about their site and you can see rapid progress with them. You can grow cress on damp cotton wool in just a few days.
When should herbs be sown?
Annual culinary species are usually sown from spring; by sowing successively every few weeks you will ensure a continuous harvest of fresh herb. Perennial and slow-germinating species are better pre-grown in advance. On a windowsill with plenty of light, many herbs can be grown practically all year round.
How do you harvest so the plant grows back?
For basil and similar herbs, leave about 15 cm of herb above the ground when harvesting - the stem with leaves will then grow back well and you will get a second harvest. Regular pinching also encourages branching and denser growth.
Can I recognise quality seed?
Watch the variety and germination rate stated on the packet and store the seed in a dry, cool place. Thanks to the precise spacing of the seeds, sowing discs give even results and are suitable when you do not want to deal with thinning plants.
