Grodan Propagation Cubes (Rockwool)
A cutting roots when it has the right balance of water and air around the roots - and that is exactly what Grodan propagation cubes made from basalt rockwool can maintain. The inert medium does not affect pH or EC, so you have full control over nutrients from day one. You can choose cubes with or without a hole, from small 25 mm propagation cubes to large growing blocks.

Grodan® rockwool propagation cubes are made from basalt (or stone) wool called rockwool and allow growers repeated use, which is one of the reasons why they are among the most widely used propagation media in the growing world. We also add the other main advantages, including TOP quality, low price and a wide selection of many available variants. Grodan® also supplies rockwool with a horizontal structure to the market, unlike other manufacturers, for uncompromising stability of the growing medium, which at the same time allows young plants to root well without unnecessary effort.
Basalt wool serves as a perfect hydrophilic growing medium for successful rooting of seedlings and cuttings. It provides seedlings and cuttings with an optimal balance of air (15%) and water (80%) in the early stage of development. It reliably retains the moisture so necessary for the youngest herbs. However, the inert medium with no effect on pH and EC values is also suitable for cultivating mature herbs, flowers or crops and is fully compatible with most automatic irrigation systems.
The small cubes are ideal for use in a small propagator or greenhouse. We also sell original Grodan rockwool as growing mats or in the form of cubes with a practical hole in the middle.
Our TIP: Want to avoid buffering? We recommend 100% natural Agra-Wool!
Frequently asked questions
How do you prepare Grodan propagation cubes before use?
Before planting, rockwool is soaked (buffered) in water adjusted to a pH of around 5.5 to balance its initial alkalinity. Leave the soaked cube to drain so that enough air remains in it, and only then place the cutting or seed into it.
Which cube size should you choose?
Small 25 - 40 mm cubes are used for germination and taking cuttings, 75 mm cubes for further seedling growth, and large 100 - 150 mm blocks for transplanting without shock, or as the target medium in hydroponics. You usually transplant the plant into a larger block once the roots grow through the wall.
Does rockwool affect pH and nutrients?
Grodan is inert - it does not change the pH or EC of the nutrient solution on its own, so you have full control over nutrient values. That is why it is popular in hydroponics and for precise dosing.
