Ornamental plants from seed allow you to choose exactly the colour, height and flowering time you need for a flower bed or window box - from spring biennials to annuals flowering until autumn.
When choosing a species, mainly follow the site conditions. Swiss pansy or wood forget-me-not can handle partial shade and a cooler spring, while Chinese aster, marigold or cockscomb need a sunny and warm site and do not tolerate frost. Carpathian bellflower, on the other hand, is fully frost-hardy and is suitable for rock gardens and perennial beds.
- Annuals - sown again every year, flowering from summer to autumn (Chinese aster, marigold, cockscomb).
- Biennials - sown in one year, flowering in the next (Swiss pansy, wood forget-me-not).
- Perennials - once planted, they return every year (Carpathian bellflower, columbine).
For more sensitive species such as forget-me-not or pansy, sow the seed on the surface of the substrate and shade it until it emerges - both plants do not tolerate the soil drying out. By contrast, species for sunny and dry sites, such as seaside alyssum, cannot tolerate waterlogging at all.
