Measuring CO2 levels (carbon dioxide) in plant cultivation can be an important aspect if you are trying to optimise plant growth and development in your environment. CO2 is one of the key elements that plants use during photosynthesis, the process during which they obtain energy from sunlight and convert it into organic matter. An increased CO2 level can increase the rate of photosynthesis and thus support faster plant growth. This can be especially beneficial in artificial growing environments such as greenhouses or hydroponic systems, where the CO2 concentration can be controlled. However, the ideal CO2 level varies depending on the plant species and their specific needs. CO2 is measured using CO2 sensors or metres. These devices can be placed in the area where the plants are located and monitor the CO2 concentration in the air. Without a number on the display, you are only guessing - and it is precisely the CO2 concentration that often decides whether the lamp and fertilisers are working at full capacity, or whether their potential is lost due to a lack of carbon in the air. This category brings together sensors, monitors and controllers that let you keep CO2 levels under control.

How to choose a CO2 metre

The key is to distinguish whether you want to monitor the values only, or also actively control the CO2 supply:

  • Monitors - display the current concentration in ppm, usually together with temperature and humidity. The digital URBAN WiFi monitor measures in real time and tracks the data directly on your phone, while the simpler digital CO2 monitor from AutoPot shows everything on an LCD display.
  • Controllers and control units - also switch the CO2 supply on when the level falls below the set limit. These include the RAM CO2 Controller or the professional GSE SGC system, which combines four sensors in one module.
  • Alarm and safety stations - from the Trolmaster family monitor high and low ppm levels and alert you to a leak or fault.

Accuracy is provided by NDIR sensors, which can reliably measure a wide ppm range - professional modules can handle even tens of thousands of ppm. For a home tent, a monitor is usually enough; for a greenhouse or larger grow room with active dosing, it makes sense to choose a controller.

Where to place the sensor and why it matters

Carbon dioxide is heavier than air, so mount the sensor at the height of the plant tops, not near the ceiling. In a well-ventilated space, you will then get a value that truly corresponds to what the plants are breathing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal CO2 level for growing?

Normal air contains around 400 ppm. Plants in growth can also make use of an increased concentration, but the ideal value depends on the species and especially on the lighting intensity - without enough light, higher CO2 will not help.

Do I need a metre even if I do not dose CO2?

Yes. Even without active supply, you can find out whether the air in a sealed tent is being depleted. Falling CO2 is a common sign that ventilation is not exchanging the air sufficiently.

Which sensor is the most accurate?

The most reliable are infrared NDIR sensors. You will find them in professional Trolmaster and GSE modules, and they measure stably for a long time without the need for frequent recalibration.

Can CO2 measurement be linked to automation?

Yes, controllers and control units can switch the solenoid valve of the cylinder, generator or ventilation according to the measured value and thus maintain the level automatically.
