A pocket scale is a small digital scale that you carry in your pocket or bag and have precise weighing always at hand. It is suitable for measuring out small doses of fertilisers and additives, weighing seeds, spices or herbs - anywhere where grams and tenths of a gram matter.
How to choose a pocket scale
Two parameters matter: capacity (maximum weight) and resolution (the smallest increment the scale can detect). The finer the resolution, the lower the maximum capacity tends to be - it is a compromise you choose according to what you weigh.
- 0.1 g resolution - a versatile choice for everyday measuring up to hundreds of grams, for example scales with a capacity of 200 to 1000 g.
- 0.01 g resolution - for precise dosing of small amounts, usually with a lower capacity of around 100 to 500 g.
- Protective cover - on most models it also serves as a weighing tray and protects the platform during transport.
Brands and popular models
Among customers, Proscale is one of the most sought-after - for example the popular compact Proscale 222 g or the precise Simplex range with 0.01 g resolution. On Balance offers robust and durable scales (for example the Miniscale and Tuff-Weigh ranges), while My Weigh with its Triton models targets above-standard capacity and Jennings JScale adds functions such as piece counting and TARE. Most models can switch between several units (g, oz, ct, gn) and have a backlit display.
Practical functions you will appreciate
The TARE function subtracts the weight of the tray or bag, so you weigh only the net contents. Piece counting counts the number of equally heavy items based on a sample. Automatic switch-off after a while of inactivity saves batteries, and the stainless steel weighing platform is easy to clean.
What is the difference between 0.1 g and 0.01 g resolution?
0.1 g resolution means the scale shows weight in tenths of a gram - enough for most everyday measuring. 0.01 g resolution is ten times finer and is suitable when you need to weigh very small doses precisely. Higher precision usually means lower maximum capacity.
How do I calibrate a pocket scale?
Calibration uses a calibration weight of a known mass, which the scale compares with its scale in calibration mode. Suitable weights can be found in the calibration weights section.
Do I need batteries for the scale?
Most pocket scales run on AAA batteries, which are usually included in the package. For a long service life, use the automatic switch-off so the scale does not stay on unnecessarily.
