Growing Mats
Growing mats are structures designed for plant cultivation that provide support and guide growth. These mats improve space use while also allowing uniform distribution of water and nutrients. They are used to support plant growth, controlled fertilisation and better nutrient uptake. They are made from various materials and are ideal for hydroponic systems or for gardeners who need maximum control over the growing environment.

Inert matting is excellent for growing plants, for example in a window box or in a drip hydroponic system. Please choose from a generous range of the best growing mats from leading brands.
Which material should you choose for mats?
We offer two main types. Mats made from mineral (rock) wool, for example Grodan, are inert, maintain a stable water-to-air ratio and are suitable for precisely controlled hydroponics. Coconut mats such as Canna Cocos or Plagron Cocos Slab are natural, retain moisture well and forgive minor watering mistakes - suitable even for less experienced growers.
What does inert medium mean?
An inert medium does not contain any nutrients itself and does not chemically interfere with the solution. You therefore have full control over all nutrition via the nutrient solution, which is ideal for hydroponics and precise fertiliser dosing.
Do I need to prepare the mat before planting?
Yes. It is advisable to saturate both mineral wool and coconut with water adjusted to the correct pH before use; for mineral wool, initial saturation with nutrient solution is also recommended. Then monitor both moisture and EC in the root zone continuously with an EC metre.
Which plants are mats suitable for?
You can use mats for fast-growing edible and ornamental plants, seedlings and mature plants in a window box or drip system. Smaller formats (such as Grodan Cress Plate) are used for growing microgreens.
