How many pieces should a grinder have?
The number of pieces determines what the grinder can do. A two-piece model only grinds, while a three-piece model adds a compartment for the ground material, and a four-piece model also includes a screen through which fine pollen falls into the bottom chamber. The more pieces there are, the more control you have over the result – and the more convenient portioning becomes.
Metal or plastic?
Metal grinders made from anodised aluminium, such as the KRUSH range or models from AC Infinity and RAW, grind more sharply, last longer and have a magnetic centre that keeps the lid in place. Plastic and acrylic models are cheaper and lightweight, and are often found as part of an airtight container – they are suitable for travelling and as a backup option.
How do you choose the diameter?
Smaller diameters of around 40 to 50 mm fit in a pocket and are sufficient for small quantities. Larger grinders of around 60 mm or more offer a more comfortable grip and more space for processing larger quantities at once. Two-piece models are the most compact, while multi-piece models with a screen are more versatile.
What is a magnetic centre for?
The magnet holds the top and bottom pieces firmly together, so the grinder does not open by itself in your pocket or bag and the ground material stays inside.
Can grinders be washed?
Metal grinders can – they can be taken apart into individual pieces and cleaned easily. With plastic models, be more careful to avoid damaging the threads and teeth.
