The popular Dutch brand BioNova became known on the global market for the exceptional quality of its products already at the beginning of the nineties. Cultivating plants in these premium substrates will be a breeze!

Behind the products from this manufacturer stand many years of intensive research and experience from growing practice. Experienced growers simply do not let them go, and for beginners they represent a safe choice.

This also applies to the vegan, 100% compostable Cocomix Plus, awarded certification from RHP, which our customers have liked so much that we can barely keep it in stock. Thanks to sophisticated processing methods, this coconut mix holds pH excellently. Perfectly clean, crushed and sieved fibres from coconut palm fruits growing in the pristine nature of Sri Lanka maintain consistent quality and airiness even long after opening. They show approximately 15% less compaction compared with other coconut substrates. With us, you can also get recyclable packaging without chemicals at an unbeatable price!

Our TIP: we recommend combining Cocomix Plus with the two-part fertiliser for coconut BioNova Coco Forte A + B.

When should you choose compressed coconut? In addition to loose mix, BioNova also offers space-saving solutions. The 10 L compressed coconut brick swells to full volume after watering, so storage and transport take up minimum space. The Open Top Coco Bag goes even further - it also functions as a plant pot, just water it and you have about 12 to 13 litres of medium ready, without having to look for a separate container. The smaller 6-litre variant is ideal for seedlings and pre-growing.

How to work with coconut

  • Watering and swelling - simply water compressed formats before use; the final volume is ready in no time.
  • A+B feeding - coconut is an inert medium without a nutrient reserve, so you grow it from the start with two-part nutrition for coconut.
  • Water and Cal-Mag - when watering with reverse osmosis, account for adding calcium and magnesium.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to rinse coconut substrate before planting?

Certified coconuts such as Cocomix Plus are washed and buffered already at the factory, so they are ready to use straight away. For compressed bricks, simply let them swell after watering and allow excess water to drain off.

What pH should coconut maintain?

Quality coconut maintains a stable, slightly acidic pH suitable for nutrient uptake. You can keep track of the actual value in the solution and medium with a pH metre and adjust it if needed.

Can coconut substrate be used more than once?

Yes, coconut is among the media that can be treated after harvest and used again. We describe how in our guides below.

What should I fertilise coconut with?

Choose nutrition designed directly for coconut, ideally the two-part BioNova Coco Forte A + B, formulated for inert medium.
