Presses and Extractors

When the harvest is ripe, processing comes next. Presses and extractors from herbs and fruits obtain the most valuable part - aromatic resin and essential oils. Here you will find rosin presses for extraction using pressure and heat alone, solvent extractors and ice extraction kits.

Not sure whether to start with a manual rosin press or go straight to hydraulics? Write to us at info@higarden.eu and we will advise you according to how much material you want to process.

Presses and extractors are used to extract the most valuable components from dried herbs and fruits - aromatic resins and essential oils. They mainly differ in method: some work purely with pressure and heat, others using a solvent or ice water. Which approach to choose depends on how pure a result you want and how much material you are processing.

Three ways to obtain an extract

  • Rosin presses - a dry method without any chemicals. The material is pressed between heated plates, and pressure and heat squeeze the resin out. The advantage is the purity of the result and simplicity. Depending on the force applied, we distinguish manual presses (for example Qnubu Rosin Press with pressure corresponding to 600 kg to 1 tonne) and hydraulic presses (from 5 to 6 tonnes up to 20 tonnes in the PRO and AUTO LION models).
  • Solvent extractors - work with dimethyl ether (DME) or n-butane, which draws the active substances from the material. The Addipure PEO range offers height-adjustable tubes (60x50 to 240x50) with a set of patented ADQ filters; the Starter Kits also include solvent sprays and PTFE film.
  • Ice extraction (bubble bags) - the gentlest method, using only ice and water. The resin is separated by shaking in a cold bath and captured in a set of sieves with different densities. OG Crush, Urban and Airontek bags are available in volumes of up to 150 litres.

How to choose a rosin press by pressure

With rosin presses, pressure and the size of the pressing area are key. As a guide: manual presses (600 kg to 1 tonne) are suitable for small quantities and occasional use, hydraulic 5 to 10 tonne presses handle regular home processing and more productive batches, while 20 tonne models with a double pressing area are aimed at maximum yield and frequent use. Precise temperature control of the heating plates is appreciated with all of them - it is exactly this that determines the quality of the extract.

The dry pressing method also requires no solvents and, according to manufacturers, is up to 80% more efficient than some older methods. Pre-press moulds are also suitable for presses; they level the material before pressing and increase yield, as well as a separate hydraulic pump for setups with their own frame.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a rosin press and a solvent extractor?

A rosin press works only with pressure and heat, without any chemicals - the result is clean and the method is safe even at home. A solvent extractor uses DME or n-butane, can draw out more substances, but requires careful handling and good ventilation.

What pressure do I need for home pressing?

For occasional small batches, a manual press with pressure of 600 kg to 1 tonne is enough. If you press regularly or want a higher yield, choose a hydraulic press from 5 tonnes upwards.

Are bubble bags gentler than pressing?

Ice extraction does not heat the material and does not use chemicals, so it preserves the maximum amount of aromatic substances. However, it is more labour-intensive and the result needs to be dried thoroughly - that is why it is often combined with subsequent pressing.
