Hydroponic systems achieve their efficiency thanks to the fact that they allow direct contact between plant roots, the nutrient solution and oxygen. This feature is essential because plants obtain the nutrients they need from the solution, which is delivered directly to their root system instead of having to draw them from the soil. The importance of oxygen lies in its essential role in root respiration and in supporting the overall metabolism of plants.

Oxygen has a positive impact on the development of the plant root system, which in turn affects the efficient use of nutrients, and therefore the process of aeration, or aeration of the nutrient solution in the tank, is a basic building block of every good watering system!
In addition to growing herbs, air pumps and aquarium air stones are also used in fish keeping.
What you need for aeration
The aeration setup is based on three elements that follow on from one another:
- Air pump - pushes air into the tank; choose the output according to its volume.
- Air stone - breaks the air into fine bubbles that transfer oxygen into the solution more effectively.
- Distribution and hoses - connect the pump to the stones; for multiple tanks, splitters are useful.
A simple rule applies: the finer the bubbles and the longer the contact with the air, the more dissolved oxygen reaches the roots.
Why is aeration important in hydroponics?
Roots submerged in the nutrient solution need oxygen to breathe. Without aeration, the oxygen in the solution would be depleted and the roots would suffer. Aeration supplies oxygen continuously, thereby supporting a healthy root system and better nutrient uptake.
How large a pump should you choose according to the tank volume?
The pump output is determined by the volume of the solution - a larger tank needs a pump with a higher air flow rate, or possibly more air stones. The aim is a visibly and evenly bubbling surface across the entire tank area.
Can an air pump also be used in an aquarium?
Yes. Air pumps and air stones are universal and are commonly used in aquariums for fish keeping too - the principle of oxygenating water is the same.
