Pollinators (pollen separation)

Pollinators separate fine pollen from plant material by sifting through a sieve - the dry way, without water or solvents. You will find hand shakers for a few grams as well as motorised drums for kilograms, with interchangeable sieves according to fineness.

Pollinator is a device for dry pollen separation - it mechanically separates tiny resin glands from dried plant material by sifting it through a fine sieve. Unlike ice extraction, it does not need water or solvents, so it is the simplest and cleanest way to obtain a concentrated powder from herbs. The category covers the full range from hand-held devices to motorised drums for large batches.

How to choose

Two things matter most: how much material you want to process at once and how fine the pollen needs to be. Capacity ranges from a few grams with hand shakers to several kilograms with large machines. Fineness is determined by sieve density in microns (µm) - a lower number lets through only the finest and cleanest particles, while a higher number also lets through larger pieces and increases yield.

  • Hand shakers - capacity in the order of grams, operation consists of shaking a closed container with a sieve - ideal for small batches and trying out the method.
  • Sifting boxes - all-plastic boxes can handle hundreds of grams at once, some with a motorised drive that shortens time and saves your hands.
  • Motorised drum machines - you fill the drum, set the timer and the machine sifts on its own - capacity from hundreds of grams to kilograms, for regular and high-volume processing.

Among hand-held solutions, our favourites are Hash Shaker and Polm Shaker from the Pollinator family. Medium batches are covered by Secret Smoke Secret Box boxes with a sieve density of around 200 microns. For large volumes, choose the automatic Pollinator P3000 or the electric extractor Martakal Vibrosift 5K with stainless steel sieves. Related categories include presses and extractors and silicone cases for storing the result.

Dry separation, or ice extraction?

Dry sifting is fast, clean and does not require drying after processing. Ice extraction systems, such as Master Trimmer MX ICE, work with cold water and filter bags - they produce finer fractions, but the result needs to be left to dry. For beginners and everyday use, a dry pollinator is the more convenient choice.

How fine a sieve should I choose?

A finer sieve (lower µm) lets through cleaner pollen with less plant matter, but reduces overall yield. A coarser sieve yields more, but less cleanly. Machines such as the Martakal Vibrosift have interchangeable sieves (e.g. 45, 75, 150 or 200 microns), so you can set the purity as needed.

Do I need to freeze the material before separation?

Dry sifting also works with material at room temperature, but cooling helps - at low temperatures the glands break off and separate more easily, so yield and purity are usually higher.

Can a pollinator handle small home quantities too?

Yes. Hand shakers are designed precisely for small batches in the order of grams, and they are easy to use in no time - fill, close, shake.

We will be happy to advise you on choosing between a hand shaker, a box and a motorised machine - just write to us and we will recommend the capacity and sieve fineness tailored to your material.
