How to choose a propagation tray
The decisive factors are the number of cells and their size. Smaller cells (around 2.5 x 2.5 cm) are suitable for dense sowing of small seeds and microgreens, while larger openings and pot trays give space to seedlings that will stay in the propagation tray longer and form a stronger root ball before transplanting. When should seedlings be transplanted from a propagation tray?
As soon as the roots have filled the entire cell and begin to show through the bottom holes, it is time to transplant into a larger pot. With small-volume cells this happens sooner; with larger openings the plant has more time.
Can a propagation tray be reused?
Yes. Quality hard plastic trays will last for many growing cycles with careful handling. Between seasons, simply wash them and let them dry so that diseases are not transferred.
Do I need a special growing medium in a propagation tray?
For germination, a fine seed-starting medium or propagation cubes are suitable - the medium should be airy and only slightly moist. Do not rush established feeding yet; the young plant will do fine with the reserves from the seed and a starter stimulant.
