MQ-500 from the American manufacturer Apogee Instruments is a handheld light metre with a connected cable that displays and stores measurement results. Its main use includes measuring direct and reflected PPFD above plant canopies or within foliage at various heights in outdoor greenhouses or indoor growing rooms. Quantum sensors can also measure PAR/PPFD in aquarium environments, including saltwater aquariums where corals grow.

The metre has manual and logging modes and records the integrated daily total in mol × m^(-2) × d^(-1). The sample mode stores up to 99 measurements. The logging mode switches the device on and off every 30 minutes to take a reading. Every 30 minutes, the device averages 60 thirty-second measured values and stores this value in memory. Up to 99 such values can be stored, and once the memory capacity is full, the oldest records are automatically overwritten by newly taken ones. The integrated daily total is taken from 48 averaged measurements (which makes a 24 h period). Manual and logging measurements can be displayed on the LCD screen or downloaded to a computer; however, the integrated daily total can only be displayed by downloading the data to a computer. For this, you need to purchase the AC-100 communication cable (a standard USB cable will not work) and ApogeeAMS software.
