For automation of growing processes to make sense, you need to gain control over the power of individual appliances. That is exactly what a speed controller is for, allowing you to control the power of fans, LED lighting or even ballasts.

Let us start with the simplest one. The rheostatic power controller Varispeed dimmer is sold as a single unit as a low-cost way to regulate the speed of a smaller intake or extract fan. You simply plug it into a socket and can happily regulate.

Among slightly more advanced devices, we often see in the basket, for example, the smooth voltage controller from the Malapa brand. Looking at it from the completely opposite end, a transformer controller with 5 speed levels is able to handle and regulate the speed of several motors at once.

The devices then differ from each other according to what they use to regulate speed. Often it is the set minimum or maximum speed, temperature, humidity, negative pressure, light (switching according to a day and night sensor), you can also set the hysteresis (switching sensitivity) or regulate only smoothly. The truly smart ones can control an appliance according to several parameters.

You can also easily choose according to the brand of your ventilation equipment, whether it is CAN-Fan, CAN-Filters or PrimaKlima.

Which controller is for AC and which for EC fans?

Classic rheostatic and transformer controllers (Varispeed, Malapa TR) are designed for AC motors. EC fans need their own EC controller - for example the Can-Fan EC speed controller or the GAS EC range, which regulates speed smoothly from 0 to 100 %. Always check what type of motor your fan has.

What is the difference between smooth and stepped regulation?

A smooth controller (for example Malapa TR20 or TR21, 2200 W) adjusts speed continuously from zero to maximum. A stepped one, such as a five-step transformer controller, switches between fixed speeds and can run several motors at once.

Can the controller switch according to temperature or humidity?

Yes. In addition to manual speed setting, more advanced models (Prima Klima ECTC, TechGrow, GSE) offer switching according to temperature, humidity, negative pressure or day and night mode, including hysteresis settings. Smart control units can also monitor several parameters at once.

Can the controller handle extract and intake separately?

Dual controllers and thermostats (for example Malapa MTJ4) have two independent outputs, so you can set different speeds for the extract and intake fan. This is useful when you need to maintain stable negative pressure in the tent.
