In hydroponics, the plant has no reserve in the growing medium - it gets exactly what you mixed into the tank, nothing more. Shogun Samurai Hydro Grow A+B is a two-part fertiliser for hydroponics in the vegetative stage: a complete growth base made up of component A and component B, which the grower mixes themselves and which guides the plant through the entire vegetative growth phase.

First measure the water, then choose the bottle

Samurai Hydro is the only Shogun range where water hardness decides the purchase - and it is the most common place where an order can go wrong. Grow is available in a version for soft water (low mineralisation, EC below 0.4) and in a version for hard water (EC above 0.4). Measure the EC of your tap water with an EC metre before choosing the variant; the exact dosage and consistency then differ according to the type of water. With Samurai Terra Grow or Samurai Coco A+B, you do not deal with this choice - there is one bottle for both types of water and only the dose changes.

What is in component A and what is in component B

The safety data sheets for both components show how they differ. Component A is based on calcium ammonium nitrate - in the version for hard water it contains 10 to 15 %, in the version for soft water 15 to 25 % - supplemented with ammonium nitrate. Component B contains magnesium nitrate, potassium nitrate and potassium dihydrogen phosphate. Together, the plant therefore receives nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and calcium. Both components are added in the same 1:1 ratio and always according to the dosage chart. Never mix them concentrated with each other - add them one after the other to measured water and stir each time.

Dosage, pH and when Grow ends

The product page states a dilution of 1 to 3 ml per litre for the Samurai Hydro range, while the Czech Shogun catalogue gives the same range as 1 to 4 - in any case, you do not take the exact figure from the range, but from the dosage chart, because it changes week by week and also according to the water. The recommended pH of the nutrient solution is 5.5 to 6.5. Expect the pH in the tank to rise during vegetative growth and the first weeks of flowering; if it climbs above 6.5, lower it with pH Down. As flowering begins, Grow ends and is replaced by Samurai Hydro Bloom A+B. Never mix Grow and Bloom in one solution - always use only one of them.

Which systems it is suitable for

Samurai Hydro is made for systems without a nutrient reserve in the medium: DWC, NFT, flood and drain, aeroponics and vertical hydroponics. It also handles medium-based systems - expanded clay, perlite and mineral wool. In the cutting and seedling stage, the range is preceded by Katana Roots, which according to our table is also used throughout the vegetative growth phase at a dose of 0.2 ml/l.

SmartZen

Samurai Hydro contains the SmartZen Maximiser biostimulant package, which the entire Samurai range has. It increases the efficiency of nutrient uptake and their distribution in the plant, chlorophyll density and the speed of photosynthesis. Shogun states that commercial tests showed 6 to 8 % higher yield than a fertiliser with the same NPK formulation without SmartZen; the product page speaks of up to 8 % higher yield. The testing methodology has not been published.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have soft or hard water?

The EC of your tap water decides: below 0.4 the water is soft, above 0.4 hard. Measure it with an EC metre before ordering - with Samurai Hydro you are not buying the same bottle with a different dose, but a different version of the product. With the Terra and Coco ranges, you do not deal with this choice; there, only the amount changes according to the water, not the product.

What ratio should I mix component A and B in?

In equal parts, that is 1:1 - whatever amount of component A you add, add the same amount of component B. Take the exact number of millilitres per litre from the dosage chart, because it changes according to the week and water hardness. Never mix the components together concentrated; add them one after the other to measured water and stir each time.

What pH should I keep in hydroponics?

The recommended pH of the nutrient solution is 5.5 to 6.5. During vegetative growth and in the first weeks of flowering, pH tends to rise - if it goes above 6.5, lower it with pH Down. In the second half of flowering it may, on the contrary, fall; if it drops below 5.5, adjust it back. Follow the dosage chart for the exact nutrient dosage.

Does Samurai Hydro also work in expanded clay or mineral wool?

Yes. In addition to purely water-based systems such as DWC, NFT or aeroponics, the range is also compatible with medium-based systems - expanded clay, perlite and mineral wool. For coco, choose Samurai Coco A+B, and for soil choose Samurai Terra Grow; both ranges are tuned separately for their own medium.
