Coconut is unforgiving: it has a water saturation limit, and once you exceed it, the solution stops spreading evenly and starts running down the edge of the pot. Shogun Samurai Coco A+B is a two-part fertiliser developed directly for coconut substrate - and as the only Shogun range, it takes care of this problem itself.

AquaZen and false runoff

False runoff is a situation where water runs out of the pot, but the substrate is only soaked around the edges. It looks as if you have watered enough, but the runoff then says nothing about what is inside - you cannot control the conductivity in the pot according to it, and the plants can get into a strongly generative mode, which can reduce fertility. Samurai Coco has the AquaZen Slow Water component precisely against this: it ensures lateral spreading of water, so the fertiliser penetrates the substrate better and the root zone is saturated more evenly. This leads to better root growth, less waste and better nutrient penetration. AquaZen is unique to this range - you will not find it in any other Shogun fertiliser.

SmartZen: an extra second component

AquaZen deals with water, SmartZen with nutrients - and Samurai Coco is the only Shogun range to have both. SmartZen Maximiser increases the efficiency of photosynthesis, optimises nutrient use and increases chlorophyll production. Shogun states that commercial tests showed 6-8 % higher fertility than with a fertiliser with the same NPK formulation without SmartZen, and for the Coco range it states up to 8 % higher yield compared with standard fertilisers; the methodology has not been published.

One set for the whole cycle

Unlike the Terra and Samurai Hydro ranges, you do not buy a separate growth bottle and a separate flowering bottle. Samurai Coco A+B is the basic nutrition for the growth and flowering phases: it contains both elements for strong vegetative development and everything for quality and yield during flowering. It is used throughout the entire cycle and ends two weeks before harvest. What changes is the dose, not the product. The composition covers macro- and micronutrients and has balanced calcium and magnesium ratios; according to the safety data sheets, Part A is based on calcium ammonium nitrate (15 to 25 %), Part B on magnesium nitrate, potassium nitrate and potassium dihydrogen phosphate.

Dosing: one product, two waters

The dilution rate for the range is 1 to 4 ml per litre and the exact figure depends on the week and the hardness of your water. Beware of a common mistake: Samurai Coco is not produced in a soft-water and hard-water version - only the Samurai Hydro range has that across all of Shogun. Here you change the amount, not the bottle. According to our table, in hard water you run 1 to 2 ml/l in the first two weeks of growth and the peak is 3 to 4 ml/l in the first three weeks of flowering; in soft water the doses are one step higher. The recommended pH is 5.5 to 6.5, target EC 1.0 to 2.0. Shogun also advises monitoring the runoff: the EC in the runoff should be up to 15 % higher than in the input solution.

What else belongs with Coco

Coconut requires two extra additives. Shogun CalMag is necessary if you are using soft or osmosis water (EC 0 to 0.2) - there you add 0.5 to 1 ml/l; with medium-hard water (EC around 0.4) the feeding plan does not need it. The second is Zenzym at a dose of 2.5 ml/l - in our table it is listed only in the programme for coconut. Before planting, it is worth pre-soaking the coconut with fertiliser solution up to full concentration until runoff appears.

Can I use Samurai Coco in soil or hydroponics?

The range is intended for coconut substrate and systems based on coconut. For soil, Shogun has Samurai Terra, for pure hydroponics Samurai Hydro. You choose the range according to the medium you are growing in.
