AH Coco Advanced XL is a compressed coco substrate – just under five kilos of dry coco in a block measuring 30 x 31 x 11 cm, which produces at least 70 litres of substrate after soaking. You carry a cube into the grow room, not a bag, and only break it up when you are ready to plant. It can be stored on a shelf, not in the corner of a room.

What this coco is like

Advanced Hydroponics washes it in desalinated water and supplies it buffered, with low EC and free from impurities. Low EC means that the substrate does not bring a large reserve of salts of its own, which you would have to take into account during the first waterings. The structure provides excellent aeration. You can use it indoors and outdoors, and with all growing methods. The block is supplied in a sealed bag.

How to break up the block

Place the block in a sufficiently large container and cover it with water. Once the coco has swollen, break it up by hand or with a fork into a loose material and let it drain before filling it into pots. The volume after soaking is at least 70 litres – prepare a container or bag large enough to hold it. The briquette will certainly not fit in a small bucket. Use the prepared substrate while it is still moist.

What to fertilise the coco with

Coco is an inert medium, so you supply all the nutrients yourself. In practice, this means basic nutrition from the first day and monitored pH of the watering solution. With reverse-osmosis, rainwater or naturally soft water, calcium and magnesium should also be added – with this brand, Advanced CalMag at a dose of 1 ml per litre. An enzymatic supplement such as Enzymes+ is also commonly used in coco; it breaks down accumulated salts and dead roots in the medium.

How much substrate does one briquette produce?

At least 70 litres of coco substrate from one five-kilogram block. This is roughly enough to fill several larger pots or an entire smaller tent. Soak it in a container that can hold this volume – the dry cube measures only 30 x 31 x 11 cm, but expands many times over once swollen.

Do I need to rinse the coco before planting?

Advanced Coco is supplied washed in desalinated water, buffered and with low EC. It therefore does not bring a large reserve of salts of its own, so rinsing before planting is not essential. If you have an EC metre, measure the water that drains from the substrate after soaking and decide based on the result whether to dilute the first watering.

What should I fertilise the coco with?

Basic nutrition from the first day. Coco is an inert medium and does not provide nutrients itself. You should also monitor the pH of the watering solution. With reverse-osmosis, rainwater or naturally soft water, add calcium and magnesium; with tap water, you already have some of them.
