The Vitalink Calibration Solution pH 4 is a solution with a known pH value used for calibrating pH meters.
Calibrating a pH meter is necessary to keep it precise and fully functional. Unreliable pH measurements can be detrimental to the crop's health and the resulting yields. Some nutrients are unavailable at certain pH levels, so keeping the pH in check is never a bad idea - especially in hydroponics.
Growers use pH 4 and pH 7 calibration solutions because that's the range they usually measure in (the ideal pH for hydroponics is 5,5-6,5).
When calibrating a pH meter, pour a small sample of the solution into a clean container, test the meter and dispose of it. Like this, the rest of the solution stays clean and doesn't get contaminated by anything that might be on the meter.
