pH buffers – a well-known solution with a given pH value intended for checking the accuracy of pH metres and used for measuring the pH value of the nutrient solution. It is necessary to realise that if you do not calibrate your pH metres at regular intervals using Buffer 4 and 7, the accuracy of the pH values indicated by the device will be unreliable. This can lead to serious losses in yield, and if this state persists, plants may be damaged.

Buffers use two values – 4 and 7 pH – to calibrate your pH testers, as they act at the edge of the pH range where you work in hydroponics, i.e. 5.5–6.5. When using them in hydroponics, it is not necessary to calibrate the pH tester to another value, as you work only within a small section of the pH scale.. When calibrating, it is advisable to use only a small sample of buffer solution in a separate container, test the metre and then discard the solution. By discarding the used solution, you prevent possible contamination of the fresh solution and ensure a longer service life of the calibration solution.
