A solution for calibrating pH meters. It has a known pH value (7 in this case), and using it can detect inaccuracies in the readings of your pH meter.

After a while, even the best pH meters lose their accuracy. Using an inaccurate pH meter can negatively impact the quality of your nutrient solution and the health of the entire crop. If you're using a pH meter, you should use it right and calibrate it regularly with a buffer.

pH buffers are solutions with a known pH value. Growers use 4 pH and 7 pH buffers because they're the margins between which they most usually work (for hydroponic solutions, the ideal pH value is between 5,5 and 6,5). 

When calibrating a pH meter, pour a small sample of the buffer into a clean container, test the meter and dispose of the used solution. Like this, the rest of the buffer stays clean and doesn't get contaminated by anything that might be on the meter.
