MoravoSeed Swiss Chard LUCULLUS seeds, green 63400
Code: GMS0206Product detailed description
A variety intended for gradual harvesting of leaves, which are used in the same way as spinach, and stalks for preparing salads and soups. Leaf Swiss chard is deep green and can really be mistaken for spinach. However, it is much healthier than spinach, especially because it does not contain as much oxalic acid. It does, however, contain a lot of vitamin C, the amount of which can be reduced by careless processing. It also contains vitamins B, E and A. Among minerals, Swiss chard offers calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and iron. Because it is related to beetroot, it contains the element betaine. Together with other components, betaine is effective against arteriosclerosis, activates liver function and prevents fatty degeneration of the liver. Swiss chard also, among other things, supports the production and secretion of digestive juices and is very effective in the prevention of tumour diseases. In addition, it has beneficial effects on metabolism and strengthens the nervous system. It purifies the blood and, thanks to its iron content, is recommended for anaemia. It is also suitable for reducing diets because it is low in calories; 100 g of Swiss chard contains only 59 kJ. The only disadvantage of this vegetable may be a mildly laxative effect, so here too the rule applies - everything in moderation. From a cultivation point of view, growing Swiss chard is not at all difficult. Sowing is carried out only in the second half of April. It is sown to a depth of about 3 cm. After five to six true leaves have formed on the plants, thinning is carried out. Only the strongest plants are left in the beds and they are top-dressed with nitrate fertiliser. The soil around Swiss chard is loosened regularly during the growing season. Especially in dry periods, Swiss chard cannot do without watering, because a lack of moisture can cause undesirable bolting. It also tolerates partial shade well, and higher air humidity and moist soil conditions have a favourable effect on its growth. It is especially suitable for cultivation in warmer areas. It prefers soil with a higher nutrient content. It can also be grown in soil fertilised with farmyard manure. It is harvested gradually; after the leaves are cut, it grows back and thus provides a crop throughout the entire growing season.
