Product detailed description
A variety intended for successive harvesting of leaves, which are used in a similar way to spinach, and stalks for preparing salads and soups. Leaf beet is deep green and can really be mistaken for spinach. However, it is much healthier than spinach, especially because it does not contain as much oxalic acid. On the other hand, it contains a lot of vitamin C, the amount of which can, however, decrease through careless processing. It also contains vitamins B, E and A. Among minerals, beetroot chard offers calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and iron. Because it is related to beetroot, it contains the element betaine. Betaine, together with other components, is effective against arteriosclerosis, activates liver function and prevents fatty degeneration. Among other things, chard also supports the production and secretion of digestive juices and is very effective in the prevention of tumour diseases. In addition, it has beneficial effects on metabolism and strengthens the nervous system. It purifies the blood and, thanks to its iron content, is recommended for anaemia. It is also suitable for weight-loss diets because it is low in calories; 100 g of chard contains only 59 kJ. The only disadvantage of this vegetable may be a mildly laxative effect, so here too the rule applies - everything in moderation. From a cultivation point of view, growing chard is not at all difficult. Sowing is carried out only in the second half of April. It is sown to a depth of about 3 cm. After five to six true leaves have formed on the plants, thinning is carried out. Only the strongest plants are left in the beds, and these are top-dressed with nitrate fertiliser. The soil around the chard is loosened regularly during the growing season. Especially in dry periods, chard cannot do without watering, because a lack of moisture can cause undesirable bolting. It also tolerates partial shade well, and higher air humidity and moist soil conditions have a favourable effect on its growth. It is especially suitable for cultivation in warmer areas. It prefers soil with a higher nutrient content. It can also be grown in soil fertilised with farmyard manure. It is harvested gradually; after the leaves are cut, it sprouts again and thus provides a harvest throughout the entire growing season.
