Product detailed description
CANNA Coco Coarse is a premium coarse-grained coco substrate of the new generation, designed for growers who require excellent aeration, rapid drainage and optimum conditions in the root zone. It offers an open structure similar to coco mixes with clay pebbles or perlite, but without the need to add these inert materials.
The combination of carefully selected coarse coco fibres, coco fibre and rice husks creates a naturally open growing medium with excellent excess-water drainage. At the same time, the entire volume of the substrate remains available for root-system development.
No clay pebbles. No perlite. No problem.
Key benefits of CANNA Coco Coarse
- open, fast-draining structure
- high aeration in the root zone
- optimised air-to-water ratio
- maximum use of the container volume for root growth
- lower risk of overwatering plants
- ideal for frequent and automated irrigation
- suitable for AutoPot, ebb & flow and drip irrigation
- pre-buffered and lightly pre-fertilised
- ready to use straight from the bag
- free from perlite and clay pebbles
More usable space for roots
Perlite or clay pebbles are commonly added to coco substrates to increase drainage and aeration. However, these inert materials also occupy part of the container volume, which the root system cannot fully use.
CANNA Coco Coarse achieves the required open structure through the composition of the substrate itself. This allows roots to use practically the entire volume of the growing container. Compared with a substrate containing 40 % clay pebbles, Coco Coarse can offer up to 40 % more usable root space. In a 10-litre pot, this means up to 4 litres of additional space for root development.
Excellent drainage and aeration
The specific structure of the coarser coco fibres creates an optimum balance between air and water in the root zone. The substrate quickly drains excess water while retaining sufficient moisture availability for plants.
Lower overall water retention combined with high aeration helps maintain a healthy root environment and reduces the risk of overwatering. CANNA Coco Coarse is therefore particularly suitable for systems with more frequent irrigation or higher moisture levels in the root zone.
Ideal for automated irrigation
CANNA Coco Coarse was also developed for modern irrigation systems. Thanks to its open structure and rapid water drainage, it is suitable for frequent irrigation cycles and various automated irrigation methods.
The substrate is particularly suitable for:
- AutoPot and other gravity-fed irrigation systems
- drip irrigation
- ebb & flow flood systems
- high-frequency irrigation
- hydroponic growing
- hand watering
- growing in larger containers
It is particularly well suited to high-frequency irrigation, where rapid excess-water drainage and sufficient oxygen in the root zone are important.
Pre-buffered and lightly pre-fertilised
CANNA Coco Coarse is pre-buffered during production. The substrate’s initial EC is approximately 1.4 ±0.2 at an extraction ratio of 1:1.5.
Buffering helps stabilise the cation exchange capacity of the coco medium, particularly in relation to calcium and potassium availability.
The substrate is also lightly pre-fertilised with starter fertiliser NPK 12-14-24, which provides young plants with a basic supply of nutrients during the initial rooting phase.
However, this pre-fertilisation is not intended as complete nutrition for the entire growing cycle. Suitable coco fertiliser is recommended from the first watering.
Rice husks for a more open structure
CANNA Coco Coarse contains sanitised rice husks, which help create an open substrate structure and improve drainage and oxygen access to the roots.
Rice husks are also a natural source of silicon, which is released gradually. However, this is only a long-term supplementary source and does not replace separate silicon supplementation where higher doses are required.

How to use CANNA Coco Coarse?
- If the substrate has settled during transport, loosen it lightly before use.
- Fill the growing container with CANNA Coco Coarse substrate.
- Transplant the plant directly into the substrate.
- Start feeding from the first watering with a suitable coco fertiliser.
- Maintain the pH of the nutrient solution between 5.5 and 6.2, generally around 6.0.
- Adjust the irrigation volume and frequency to the plant size, container volume, environmental conditions and growth stage.
Recommended fertilisation
For most growing systems, the manufacturer recommends using CANNA COCO A&B.
For high-frequency irrigation with higher drainage, typically 10 % or more, for example in smaller containers irrigated several times a day, CANNA COGr Vega & Flores is more suitable.
- minimal drainage: CANNA COCO A&B
- higher drainage of 10 % or more: CANNA COGr Vega & Flores
CANNA Coco Coarse is also compatible with RHIZOTONIC, CANNAZYM, CANNABOOST, CANNA Silica and CANNA PK 13/14 products.

CANNA Coco Coarse vs. CANNA COCO Professional Plus
CANNA Coco Coarse is not a replacement for CANNA COCO Professional Plus. The two substrates are designed for different growing methods.
CANNA COCO Professional Plus is suitable for growers looking for a universal coco substrate with higher water capacity. CANNA Coco Coarse, on the other hand, has a more open and more highly aerated structure with lower water retention.
It is therefore particularly suitable for more frequent irrigation, automated systems and conditions in which the root zone is naturally more moist.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to add perlite or clay pebbles to CANNA Coco Coarse?
No. CANNA Coco Coarse was developed to achieve the required drainage and aeration through its own structure. Adding perlite or clay pebbles is not necessary.
Is CANNA Coco Coarse suitable for an AutoPot system?
Yes. Its open structure, good drainage and high aeration make Coco Coarse a very suitable medium for AutoPot and other automated or gravity-fed irrigation systems.
Does the substrate need to be flushed before use?
No. CANNA Coco Coarse contains washed and buffered coco fibres and is ready to use. If the substrate has settled during transport, simply loosen it before filling the container.
Is watering with water alone sufficient for plants?
No. The substrate is only lightly pre-fertilised, and its initial nutrient supply is not intended as complete nutrition for the entire growing cycle. Use a specialised coco fertiliser from the first watering.
What pH should be used for the nutrient solution?
The recommended pH of the nutrient solution is 5.5 to 6.2. In general, the manufacturer recommends aiming for approximately 6.0.
Can CANNA Coco Coarse be used throughout the entire growing cycle?
Yes. CANNA Coco Coarse can be used from transplanting young plants through to the end of the growing cycle when used with an appropriate fertilisation programme.
Can the substrate be reused?
Yes. Before reusing it, remove as much old root material as possible and flush the substrate thoroughly. When preparing for the next growing cycle, the manufacturer also recommends using CANNAZYM.
Storage
- store in a cool, dry place
- keep the bag sealed until use
- protect from direct sunlight and excessive heat
- do not expose to rain or standing water for prolonged periods
- handle carefully to preserve the structure of the substrate
CANNA Coco Coarse is a modern alternative to coco mixes with perlite or clay pebbles. It provides an open structure, high drainage and sufficient oxygen for roots, while the entire volume of the growing container remains available for root-system development.
