The role of calcium in the plant

Calcium (Ca) is an indispensable building block for plants - it works like cement that holds cells together. Its key role lies in the stabilisation and strengthening of cell walls and membranes. Strong cell walls mean a more robust plant that better withstands stress, diseases and pest attacks. Calcium also affects growth hormones and regulates the transport of water and nutrients.

Symptoms of calcium deficiency and excess

Calcium deficiency is shown by softening of tissues, which leads to increased susceptibility to mould and fungal diseases. You may observe the death of young leaves and growing tips, yellow areas with brown round spots on the leaves. In fruiting plants such as tomatoes or peppers, it causes blossom end rot in fruit, bitter pit in apples or fruit cracking.

Calcium excess is less common and may appear as brown spots on leaves, indicating a disruption in nutrient balance.

Instructions for use and dosage

Apply Ca 15 whenever symptoms of deficiency appear, or preventively to strengthen plant tissues. It can be used both as a drench and as a foliar spray.

In periods of high air humidity, when water transport in the plant is slowed down, we recommend doubling the dose to strengthen tissues. A dosage of 1 ml per 1 l water (ratio 1:1000) increases the calcium content in the solution by 3.2 mmol.

Professional tips from growers

• To prevent fruit rot and cracking, apply Ca 15 once a week throughout the entire fruit formation phase in tomatoes, peppers and other crops.
• Before taking cuttings from mother plants, use Ca 15 to strengthen their tissues - the cuttings will be healthier and root better.
• After pollination of plants, increase the dose of Ca 15 together with MgO 10 - this will support healthy seed development and ensure an adequate supply of key nutrients.

Ca 15 is also suitable with the base fertiliser Coco Forte A+B when growing in coco with soft water or RO, when the substrate needs calcium supplementation beyond standard feeding.
