Biochar – finely ground charcoal for healthier and more fertile soil

Biochar with a fine 0–1 mm fraction is a natural soil additive that helps improve the properties of soil and growing media. It is finely crushed charcoal with high porosity, which, thanks to its small particle size, is easy to mix evenly with soil.

Biochar is produced through pyrolysis, meaning the thermal decomposition of organic material with limited access to oxygen. The result is a material with a high content of stable carbon and a porous structure that can contribute to more efficient soil management of water and nutrients.

Unlike coarse biochar, this fine powdered variant is primarily intended for the even enrichment of growing media. It is not primarily intended for creating a drainage layer or for the mechanical aeration of soil.

Why choose the fine 0–1 mm fraction?

The main difference between fine and coarse biochar is the particle size and the way the particles act in the growing medium.

Fine Biochar 0–1 mm has a larger external surface area per unit of weight than the coarser fraction and enables more intensive contact with the surrounding soil. Thanks to its powdery consistency, it is easy to incorporate into finer growing mixes.

It is particularly suitable where the aim is to evenly enrich the growing medium with stable carbonaceous material, rather than to create a coarse and airy structure.

Coarse Biochar 1–25 mm, on the other hand, is more suitable when the additive is also intended to mechanically influence the soil structure and create larger air spaces.

How does Biochar work?

Biochar contains numerous microscopic pores that influence its ability to retain water and interact with dissolved substances in soil.

When incorporated into a growing medium, it can help reduce the loss of certain nutrients, support microbial activity and improve the soil environment. The specific effect depends on the properties of the biochar used, the soil type and the method of application.

Biochar itself is not a complete fertiliser. Its main function is to act as a long-term soil additive that can improve the conditions for the use of supplied nutrients.

How to use fine Biochar?

Fine Biochar can be incorporated directly into growing media, garden soil or compost. For better results, it is advisable to moisten it and enrich it with nutrients before application.

1. Preparation before use

We recommend mixing Biochar with compost, vermicompost or a suitable organic fertiliser before incorporating it into the soil.

This process, often referred to as activating or charging biochar, helps to pre-colonise its surface with microorganisms and enrich it with nutrients. It also reduces the risk of their initial temporary retention after application to the soil.

2. Mixing into the growing medium

Mix the Biochar evenly with the growing medium so that it is distributed throughout its entire volume. With the fine fraction, thorough mixing is important to prevent areas with an excessively high concentration of charcoal from forming.

3. Adding to compost

Fine Biochar can also be added to compost. During composting, it can capture some of the released nutrients and create a suitable surface for colonisation by microorganisms.

4. Use in Living Soil

Biochar is a suitable supplementary component of organic Living Soil-type growing mixes. It helps create an environment that supports soil biology and long-term nutrient management.

Warning: Due to its very fine powdery consistency, we recommend slightly moistening Biochar before handling it to reduce dust. When using it in growing containers, it is advisable to start with a smaller quantity and adjust the application rate according to the properties of the growing medium.
