Winner winter leek is a delicate variety for autumn harvest and for overwintering in the field.

Winter leek is characterised by a shorter, but at the same time thicker white part, as well as a longer growing period.

Leek is an excellent source of vitamin C and many minerals. It has antibacterial effects and has a beneficial effect on the immune system.

In addition, it is a vegetable with excellent flavour, suitable for cooking as well as for direct consumption.

You can start pre-growing the seeds already in the winter months. Direct sowing is possible from April to May. Sowing depth is 0.5 cm. Germination time is 2 – 3 weeks. The ideal temperature for germination is 15 – 20 °C. It is necessary to allow for a growing period of up to 200 days.

During April, we transplant the seedlings to an outdoor site that should be sufficiently sunny. Leek is not particularly demanding to grow, nor does it have specific substrate requirements. It will thrive in almost any soil that is sufficiently deep, light and adequately supplied with nutrients. Neutral pH is ideal. We plant the seedlings to a depth of at least 10 cm, in rows spaced 30 to 40 cm apart. Leek requires regular and sufficient watering and does not mind being top-dressed with complete fertilisers (Cererit, NPK). Suitable preceding crops include potatoes or cucumbers, for example.

Leek is susceptible to the leek leaf miner, which destroys the white part of the plant. To prevent its occurrence, it is a good idea to cover the bed with non-woven fabric.

You can leave leek in the bed throughout the winter months and use it gradually – it can withstand temperatures down to -15 °C.
