Dry Concentrated Acids

Dry acid is a practical way to keep the pH of your nutrient solution under control - you mix the solution from powder at home, so there is no risk of spillage during transport. It is suitable for growers who adjust water in larger volumes and want a concentrated supply for a long time.

Dry acids are very suitable for transport; the acid only forms when they are mixed with water. As this is a concentrated compound, you can make several litres of acid from 1 kg, so the price of the acid is very favourable and, in addition, there is no risk of spillage.

Why do growers choose the dry form? Liquid pH minus is difficult to transport and, if spilled, can cause damage, whereas powder is stable and compact. A typical example is Terra Aquatica pH- Powder (formerly GHE pH Down dry) - a pure concentrate from which you can easily prepare a solution to lower the pH of both the nutrient solution and the watering water.

Frequently asked questions

Why adjust the pH of water at all?

The pH value determines how well individual nutrients are available to the plant. When the water is too alkaline, some nutrients become blocked and the plant cannot take them up, even if they are present in the solution. By lowering the pH to the suitable range, you ensure that the fertiliser really works.

How much solution does dry acid make?

Because it is a concentrate, you can mix several litres of usable solution from one pack. It therefore lasts significantly longer than a small bottle of liquid product and you do not need to top it up so often.

How should dry acid be used safely?

Always add the powder to water, never the other way round, work in small doses and measure the pH continuously. Use gloves and mix in a well-ventilated area. After each adjustment, let the solution settle for a while and check the value again.

How do I measure pH?

For accurate checking, use a pH metre - it is a good idea to maintain the probe with calibration and cleaning solutions so that it measures reliably throughout its service life.
