What is "living soil"?

Living Soil is a concept that mimics natural ecosystems. It is a substrate that contains a complex community of beneficial bacteria, fungi (including mycorrhizae), protozoa and other microfauna. These microscopic helpers form what is known as a 'soil food web', which constantly breaks down organic matter and minerals in the substrate and converts them into nutrients readily available to plant roots. Your plants can thus take exactly what they need, when they need it.

How to do it - a step-by-step guide

Proper preparation is the key to activating the full potential of this concentrate. Follow these steps:

  1. Mix the concentrate 1:1 with a less nutritious substrate. Ideally use a light-weight substrate such as Light-Mix, coconut fibre or unfertilised peat. 50 litres of concentrate and 50 litres of base substrate will yield 100 litres of final living soil.
  2. Maturation ("cooking"): After mixing, moisten the mixture slightly so that it feels like a wrung-out sponge. Then store it for 2 to 4 weeks in a warm, dark place (e.g. in a sealed bag or container). During this time, microbial life will be activated, nutrients will stabilise and the soil will 'ripen'.
  3. Planting and watering: After the ripening period, your living soil is ready for use. For watering, it is crucial to use chlorine-free water (filtered, reverse osmosis or tap water that has been standing for at least 24 hours) so as not to harm the beneficial microorganisms. Due to the natural buffering capacity of the substrate , it is not necessary to adjust the pH of the watering solution.

Detailed composition

The rich and complex composition guarantees top quality and excellent results. Each ingredient has its own indispensable role.

  • The base: a mixture of high-quality peat (H3-H6), coir and perlite (0-5 mm) ensures ideal structure, aeration and water retention.
  • Organic Nutrients: A powerful combination including earthworm humus, bat guano, seaweed meal and alfalfa meal provides plants with a long-term nutrient supply.
  • Minerals and supplements: Basalt meal, calcium carbonate and magnesium lime enrich the substrate with a full spectrum of trace elements and help stabilize pH.
  • Microbial life: The substrate is inoculated with an effective blend of beneficial bacteria, protozoa and mycorrhizal fungi to kick-start the soil food web.
