Trichoderma: The natural way to a bountiful, healthy harvest

Protect your crop from molds and from the action of pests or harmful pathogens! Trichoderma is an extremely beneficial fungus for plants of all kinds, as it significantly helps keep them in good condition and improves their growth and subsequent yield. In this article you will learn more about the beneficial effects of this fungus and also find out which products contain it.

Fungi of the genus Trichoderma, such as probably the best-known Trichoderma harzanium, are the most widespread fungi found in soil. Here we mean outdoor, natural soil. Any more experienced grower has at some point heard about how to use these beneficial fungi to achieve higher yields, nicer flowers and healthier crops, and that is why they are often added to the growing medium used for cultivating plants in an indoor environment, for example in a growbox. However, there are also substrates that already contain Trichoderma. Here are several examples:

Why is this fungus so sought after by growers, and why does applying products that contain Trichoderma practically always bring excellent results?

• Fungi of the genus Trichoderma (hereafter just Trichoderma) establish symbiotic relationships with plant roots.
• Trichoderma forms its own colonies in the plant’s root system, which protect the root ball from attacks by pathogens, whether these are various molds or bacteria.
• Unlike animals, plants cannot produce classic antibodies against harmful pathogens, but when attacked they produce specific molecules (proteins, phytoalexins, etc.) with fungicidal and antibacterial properties.
• Trichoderma acts as a stimulant of the plant’s natural defense mechanism described above, even when the plant is not directly threatened, because it secretes substances that cause the plant to secrete defensive compounds continuously.
• Thus it is a biological prevention of fungal and bacterial diseases in plants.
• Trichoderma also parasitizes other fungi whose colonies are undesirable for the plant root system and reliably suppresses them. A typical example of significant benefit for any grower is the prevention of root rot.
