Sea of Green (SOG) — A Sea of Green
Do you have only limited growing space and want the biggest possible yield? It has been some time since Dutch growers introduced this low-maintenance, effective, and therefore now widely used growing technique that makes indoor cultivation of herbs in growbox easier and more efficient. Let's take a closer look!

What is the basic principle of the SOG plant growing method? Simply shortening the vegetative phase of the plant to the necessary minimum and inducing flowering faster in order to maximize the use of space in any indoor grow room.
Right from the start, here are three reasons why it's worth adopting the SOG growing method:
- Consistent and overall higher yield.
- Low height requirements, meaning more plants in limited space!
- Earlier harvests, as plants are typically only in the vegetative phase for two weeks, often even shorter. Short-term cultivation also reduces the risk of plant diseases or pests.
Now let's explain how to proceed:
- With this method, clones or cuttings are usually planted rather than seeds. (How to recognize a quality clone? Read HERE). For a sea of greenery, choose varieties with the shortest possible flowering time and a lower expected height.
- Plant your favorite plants so that each ideally has at least 30 x 30 cm of space. For practical and aesthetic reasons, use smaller square pots.
- Using LED lamps or light from discharge lamps, illuminate the plants 18 hours a day until they reach a height of about 25 to 30 cm.
- Then change the light cycle for a rapid transition to flowering, i.e. 12/12. If you do not want to limit yourself strictly by the recommended plant height (see above) for this action, you can also base it on the plants' age. At this point your plants should have been growing for a maximum of three weeks, usually rather only two.
- As a result of the previous steps, a typical canopy of flowers will form during the flowering phase. This also leads to maximum use of artificial lighting.
- Use high-quality, clean scissors to trim all branches beneath the flower canopy.

Our TIP: By using a hanging structure you can grow plants one above another with this method, further maximizing space in the growbox or grow room. It takes a bit of DIY spirit, but it's worth it!
- Keep in mind that with this indoor cultivation method a quality light source is even more important than ever, as it does most of the work. For repeated harvests it is certainly worth investing, for example, in LED grow lights from the brand Lumatek.
- The rest is taken care of by quality ventilation that removes excess humidity and heat from the growing space.
If you plan to harvest flowers or crops repeatedly using this method, we recommend investing in really good equipment right away with regard to the price-performance ratio.
