Humidifier or dehumidifier?

That's the question we'll answer in this article! Optimizing cultivation spaces and climate control using suitable devices is fundamentally important for the health of plants, as you may already know from growing practice or from our previous blog posts.

Correct humidity inside a growbox or cultivation room is crucial, especially when cultivating plants grown in controlled environments (indoor). It depends both on the species being grown and on the current developmental stage they are in.

OUR TIP: Besides the course of the growing cycle, growers also deal with humidity when properly storing the harvest. In this case, in addition to modern devices that maintain the required humidity in storage spaces, you can also use simple but perfectly functional Integra Boost sachets to keep ideal humidity directly inside the storage container. (About how to properly store the harvest, read the separate article HERE.)

Now we'll look at the use of devices for easy and reliable climate control inside any spaces, which we mentioned in the heading.

Humidifiers

These devices require a power source and water to operate. Depending on how the water supply is provided, we distinguish two types of humidifiers:

  • Humidifiers with their own water source in the form of an integrated tank. An example is the bestselling ultrasonic humidifier HUMIPRO 4L. It is equipped with a clear LED panel and a double nozzle rotating 360°. These humidifiers stand out for their ease of use and, importantly, the ability to regulate output, unlike the type of humidifiers described below.
  • Other humidifiers require water to be supplied externally, or a special head with a float must be immersed in it; the float is either included in the package or can be purchased separately. A classic example are humidifiers that create a typical water mist, such as the Ultrasonic Mist Maker.
  • Unfortunately, there is no simple conversion from square meters of cultivation area to the number of membranes. There are other variables. It also depends on:
    • The correct placement of the humidifier, meaning in the direction of the airflow.
    • The type and intensity of heating in the room or cultivation box.
    • The exhaust of air, which also reduces air humidity in the cultivation space.
    • The placement of the cultivation box and the average ambient temperature.
  • It should be added that occasional cleaning is sufficient, but if you immerse Mist Makers in a sufficiently large amount of water, they allow almost continuous operation. That is a big advantage. Also useful is the cut-off sensor for moments when the water in the container runs out. The devices stop automatically and the membranes remain undamaged. The other side of the coin is the lack of power regulation, which means these devices always run at full capacity.
  • Cloning and cuttings: “Humidifiers” are widely used to successfully root young plants during early developmental stages, when it is necessary to maintain a minimum humidity of 60% in the cultivation space.
  • Houseplants: A classic example where a quality humidifier is indispensable is apartments, which are often overheated by central heating during the colder months.

Dehumidifiers

  • You already know that for young plants and clones it is very important to maintain at least 60% humidity in the cultivation space. In later developmental stages, however, high humidity is harmful, and if plants are, for example, in the late flowering phase placed in a humid environment, you risk the presence of mold. Mold on the buds is the last thing you want to deal with in the late flowering stage.
  • When it comes to the final quality of the harvest during drying, dehumidifiers are again an indispensable helper, because you need to achieve the lowest possible humidity in the room and even increasing fan speed to the maximum often may not be enough.
  • An example of a practical dehumidifier that does not take up unnecessary space even in a cultivation box is the Hutermann HD-250 or its more powerful colleague Hutermann HD-500.
  • These devices are characterized by very economical operation, for which no additional preparations are needed.
  • They operate on the principle of drawing in moisture and subsequent condensation, where the water accumulates in an integrated removable tank. After the tank is full, the device switches off automatically.
