How to Simplify Plant Propagation?

Spring is ideal for sowing and propagation, but it's not too late in summer either. Would you like to grow radishes, head lettuce or perhaps spinach right now? Or do you need to propagate one of your houseplants? We'll show you how you can use growth stimulators, a suitable substrate or a small greenhouse to ensure success in any season.

One of the simplest ways to propagate a plant is by taking cuttings. Simply remove part of the apical shoot from the mother plant. This does not harm the plant and the cutting usually roots within a few weeks. For more effective rooting of cuttings you can use a rooting stimulator. Remove the lower part of the cutting (approx. 2–4 cm), dip it into the stimulator and carefully place it into the prepared substrate so you don't rub off the stimulator. The plant will then root much more easily and in less time. Another option is to use a special fertilizer for young plants and cuttings. It has a specific composition to avoid burning the plant and supports the development of the root system and growth.

Another aspect of successful propagation is the substrate. Suitable options are lightly pre-fertilized mixes aerated with perlite. There are minimal nutrients in these; after about the first week we fertilize according to the plants' needs, for example with the aforementioned fertilizer for cuttings. A possible option for propagation or sowing are also planting cubes or Jiffy tablets. Their advantages are easy use, a balanced air-to-substrate ratio and good water absorption. Peat tablets are also very compact; they contain a mixture of peat and coconut fibers and only reach their full volume after being soaked with water and swelling. After germination or rooting, plants are transplanted into the substrate together with the tablet, and over time the roots simply grow through it.

A final tip to support seed germination or cutting establishment is to use home propagators and greenhouses. Besides the ordinary ones, there are also heated models with a thermostat to create specific temperature conditions. The ideal placement is on a windowsill where direct sunlight does not fall, preventing burning or overheating.
