Eliminate grow room odor once and for all

For many growers the main advantage of indoor cultivation is the discretion this method of growing plants offers. A growroom or grow tent, however, can easily reveal compromising odors that may annoy or attract unwanted attention. In the following article we will cover methods that will help you effectively neutralize odors from a cultivation room or growbox.

Odor filters with activated carbon

carbon filtersCarbon filters that absorb odors are now standard equipment for every growroom or grow tent. They work on a simple principle: air from the exhaust fan passes through a cylinder filled with activated carbon, which captures particles that cause odors.

  • Appropriate size: For a carbon filter to work properly, its size and capacity must match the performance of the exhaust fan. For example, for the PRIMA KLIMA exhaust fan with a capacity of 400 m3/h the suitable choice is the PRIMA KLIMA odor filter with a capacity of 480 m3/h. The maximum allowed airflow through the filter should always exceed the fan's output so that wear does not lead to clogging the ventilation system.
  • Installation: Most growers connect the odor filter before the exhaust fan so that all the air from the grow space comes into contact with the activated carbon. The air exiting the ducting outside the growbox or growroom will then be odor-free. If that layout is not possible for your setup, you can also install the filter at the end of the ventilation system in the direction of airflow. This method may be less effective due to possible leaks in the ducting or tent. When installing an odor filter you will need cable ties and ventilation ducting to connect the components.
  • Regular maintenance and replacement: Activated carbon filters are extremely effective, but they don't last forever. Replace a worn odor filter approximately every 6–10 months or every three growing cycles. You can extend the life of the carbon filter by cleaning or replacing the white protective fabric that captures dust and solid particles after each cycle.

Don't want to worry about assembling a ventilation system for your growbox? We've prepared ventilation kits that include an exhaust fan with a matching odor filter and all accessories needed for installation.

Gels and sprays for odor neutralization

chemical odor neutralizersChemical odor neutralizers contain aromatic compounds that emit an intense fragrance while simultaneously absorbing other odors. Their main advantage is versatile application thanks to easy handling. Another benefit is the immediate effect, which is useful for example during harvest.

  • Usage: To avoid affecting the terpene profile of the plants, we recommend placing chemical odor absorbers outside the cultivation space.
  • Installation into ducting: For maximum effect we recommend connecting a duct connector with a space for placing an odor neutralizer in gel or similar form into the ventilation system.
  • Automatic dispensers: ONA Block Dispenser and other automatic dispensers are recommended to be placed by the entrance doors to the growroom or the room with the growbox.

Additional tips for odor control

In addition to using carbon filters and chemical odor neutralizers, you can take several simple measures that further reduce unwanted odors in your growroom or growbox.

  • Adequate ventilation: Make sure your cultivation space is sufficiently ventilated. It's important not only to have a sufficiently powerful exhaust fan but also access to fresh air.
  • Seal all gaps: Leaks in the growbox or in the ventilation ducting are a common cause of unwanted odors. It is important that as much air as possible passes through the exhaust fan with the carbon filter.
  • Air ionizers: High-performance air ionizers are suitable for large cultivation rooms of medicinal plants. These are negative ion generators that absorb odors and remove dust particles from the air.
